Earth rising over the surface of the moon. This painting is based on photography from NASA's Apollo 8 mission that the astronauts took from the moon itself. Those photos always filled me with a sense of awe. Even more so now when I think about it in the light of the Quraan.
The celestial bodies that inhabit our Solar System and the universe at large are in themselves signs of the creation. The orbit of the Moon makes its way around our blue-green orb we call our home. In the same way, the Earth makes its own way around the Sun taking our natural satellite with it. From this vantage point on the face of the moon, the earth appears as the moon does on earth. Putting into stark perspective how small and we actually are in the great scheme of things.
This truth was eluded to in the Quran. Surah al Anbiyah in verse 33 it states "It is He Who created the Night and the Day and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) swim along each in its rounded course. " 14” X 10” (36cm x 26cm approx) Acrylic on Canvas. Ready to hang.
